Transient, fleeting and disposable – so many things in our modern world are characterized by these words of impermanence. So when a company steeped in the traditions of integrity, trust, knowledge and commitment for over half a century has your back, the feeling of comfort, security and, yes, relief is overwhelming.

It’s not only the clients of Straughn & Turner, P.A., law firm that feel this reassuring embrace – it is the entire community, as the firm is just as passionate about doing good for its fellow humans as it is devoted to providing outstanding legal services.

The firm’s longstanding tradition of philanthropy, including generously supporting higher education, originated with its founder, Jack Straughn, and the firm’s dedication and support has been felt by Polk State College for many years. Jack Straughn began his generosity toward the school with a very unique and touching gesture.

“When my father had some heart issues many years ago, he had a defibrillator when he was traveling. He thought it would be nice to begin a program here at Polk State, and he funded that,” attorney Richard E. Straughn, Jack’s son who is partner of the company today, explained. This made Polk among the first community colleges to install the life-saving equipment on campus.

And Straughn & Turner, P.A. has not only contributed to saving lives, but to transforming countless futures. “While Jack passed away in 2000, Richard and fellow partner Mark G. Turner, along with their associates and staff, carry on Jack’s mission. Their passion and commitment to Polk State is epitomized by their outstandingly generous collective giving total of $43,000 for traditional and elementary scholarships, as well as for athletics, the arts, and various other College programs.

In addition, Richard and Mark have served on the Foundation Board in leadership positions, and Mark remains active through his leadership on the College’s District Board.

“We have met students who have benefited from the scholarships, and they have an opportunity to get an education, and that’s certainly important. It feels good to help somebody. It’s a humbling experience, and I feel blessed to be able to help others,” said Richard.

On February 23, 2015, at Polk State College’s District Board of Trustees meeting, a check presentation ceremony honored Straughn & Turner, P.A. for the immense good it has done for Polk State College. Bonnie Parker, Development Chair of the Polk State College Foundation Board of Directors, introduced Richard Straughn and Mark Turner. She warmly expressed the heartfelt gratitude of her fellow Board members, the District Board, and the students who ultimately benefited from their leadership and generosity.

“We enjoy and appreciate what Polk State College does for this community. We appreciate the recognition, and we intend to keep Polk State College high on the list of the causes we support,” said Turner.

“Polk State College is part of the fabric of this community,” said Straughn. “It’s just a great institution, and a lot of fine, fine people have come through here and work here. And it’s well worth our support,” he added.
